Between HCMC and Mekong Delta, Vietnam 27 June 2007

The first boat we rode on the Mekong.
The first boat we rode on the Mekong.

We have begun our journey south from Saigon to the delta region of the Mekong. Last night was hilarious! The first restaurant we went to had delicious food and the waitress asked my friend if he was Vietnamese, which is becoming a constant occurrence. But what was most funny was the next bar we went to where the waitress did not just assume he was Vietnamese, she knew it! She started speaking to him in Vietnamese without a second thought and I enjoyed a good laugh on his behalf. So after a 6am wake up, we are on our coach and about 1 and a half hours from our delta destination. So far I have seen small rice fields and a never ending sprawl of shanty towns, juxtaposed heavily to the mansions of the newly made wealthy of Vietnam.

We’ve just stopped at a dirty tourist trap and the toilets are bad, plus the drinks are expensive. I am in a desperate need to go caca en el baño, ahora mismo (poo in the toilet, right now). But I’ll just have to hold on till mi culo (my bum) explodes, so I’ll try to eat less, not bloody likely.

More of the day in next week’s post! 😀
